Changing the order in which layers are composited can change the look of your output dramatically- it all depends on the composition modes you’re using.

If the layer’s components haven’t been opened into independent windows they will be displayed in the workspace inspector window, where you can interact with them. Most importantly, clicking on a layer or group in the list of layers will inspect that layer. Layers are created, inspected, edited, rearranged, deleted, grouped, and generally controlled via the “ Layers” tab in the Workspace Inspector.

A canvas has an explicit size, and is treated like a group- all the canvas’ sub-layers are composited (or “flattened” to use the photoshop metaphor) within the canvas to produce an image which is then run through the canvas’ FX chain (a series of image filters which modify the image).

VDMX has a layer-based rendering engine- if you’re familiar with photoshop, then you’re familiar with the basic rendering model VDMX uses to produce its output: If you just want a starter look at VDMX, check out aeinn’s complete guide, although it’s about time for a beta 7 guide!Īlso via comments: Rolin of DecollageTV has put together a terrific list of links in his : Layers on a Canvas The 'Layers' tab of the Workspace Inspector. Iteration in code is pretty straightforward (think “for” loops), but while it’s powerful in a patch, it’s conceptually a bit of a challenge. Possibly the most perplexing concept to wrap your head around in Quartz Composer is the iterator. And he points us at some other useful tutorials, too. Well, good news for you: readers have a ton of tutorials for both, thanks to some intrepid readers in comments on that fantastic-looking CONTAKT/Richie Hawtin show.įirst up, Joris de Jong aka Hybrid Visuals has started a series of tutorials on VDMX and Quartz Composer – two delicious tastes put together. Or perhaps you’re learning VDMX, the brilliant, semi-modular Mac-friendly visual tool – which also happens to host Quartz Composer compositions as effects or generative sources?
